Flash Fiction February 2024 Day 7: The Darkest Hour (Fyr)

A/N: I am slowly beginning to feel better after my ER visit this week though I also seem to be getting a bit of a cold. Regardless of that though I had a lot of fun with today's prompt, I think it's my favorite so far this month!

Prompt: In this hour I do not believe any darkness will endure

When I got a concerning letter from the head of the Blades followed by a strange letter from the Imperial Elder Council I was rather confused. What’s this nonsense about a crisis? Jauffre, a supervisor and friend of Caius Cosades, the former Imperial Spymaster for Morrowind had sent me a letter, along with a signature from Jauffre’s protege Baurus. The letter written in typical Blades cypher was the first news I heard of the emperors assassination along with all his heirs and that Oblivion gates had begun to open across Cyrodiil with the potential for them to spread across the empire along with all the agents of evil that come with them. The letter ended with a request; that I come to Cyrodiil at once to assist in any way I can, due to my long history of assisting with such matters within my capacity and extensive research into matters involving Oblivion and the Daedra, as I do find that realm and it’s inhabitants- both good and evil, fascinating. A few days later Delte informed me that another letter had arrived, with Valan being the deliverer of both- he does make a good errand boy when he’s not busy fulfilling prophecies, causing problems throughout the country, or doing work for the Blades and others such as Eno Hlaalu of the Morag Tong. This letter obviously did not go through the same arduous journey that the letter from Jauffre did, and came from a place with much larger pockets- the high quality paper and nearly pristine envelope being the first marker of that. Upon opening the letter I found the letter came from a very different place indeed, while still within the empire and its associated organizations, this letter was signed by members of the Elder Council, those in charge of running the empire in the absence of an emperor. Written in plain language rather than the secretive cypher of the Blades it outlines simply that by their decree, regardless of what the Blades request, I am to stay put and not come to Cyrodiil. They have effectively put me in charge of monitoring and addressing any aspect of the Crisis that makes itself known in Morrowind. While I disagree with the ruling, I’m not in the mood to argue with the rather annoying head of the council. Knowing Jauffre well, in addition to having met Baurus at least once, I have faith in the Blades that they will be fine. The letter from the Blades also mentioned that Uriel had a bastard at one point, who may still be alive, and Baurus sent a prisoner who was in the cell that contained the escape passage for the emperor to Jauffre with the amulet of kings and he has since sent her to track down the emperors unknown child. Baurus in the meanwhile has been tasked with researching further into the assassins that seem to be from a mysterious cult even I haven’t heard of…and being around as long as I have I’ve encountered my fair share of cults. They will be fine, if they can find the heir, and I shall stay here as a steadfast watchman. Asking for Alfe to fetch my armor and for Beyte to write to Ayron asking him to come to Tel Fyr I go out to take a walk around the tiny island that is my home. The sky is dark in the west, but in this hour I do not believe any darkness will endure.
