Flash Fiction February Day 1 Very Peri (Ling)

Flash Fiction February: Write between 500 and 1500 words a day where possible during the month of February

Day 1 Very Peri:

Periwinkle is always a color I’ve enjoyed, not overly saturated or dark like amethyst, and yet at the same time not too light. As a  member of the purple family it has its associations with royalty and nobility, and since I have an audience with the honorable, or dishonorable, depending on who you ask, Hlaalu royal family I need a dress fit for the occasion. “Lin?” I call downstairs where I last saw her working on examining a rather peculiar daedric artifact at her desk “Yes?” She replies, yelling loudly enough that I can hear her. “Could you sew me a dress?” I ask and get a reply saying “Of course I can sew you a dress. What are you crazy?! Bring down the fabric and I’ll start.” She pauses and mutters “You just gave me a good reason to take a break from work anyways…” Gathering up the periwinkle colored cloth I manage to bring it downstairs without tripping over myself or down the stairs, and not very ceremoniously drop it on the table in front of Lin. “Here you go.” She looks me up and down while getting out her sewing supplies, takes a few measurements, and gets to work. “What kind of dress do you want?” she questions as she rearranges some things in preparation and sits down. Hmmm, I had not really thought about it if I am to be honest other than I need a dress. “One that looks good?” Lin gives me a less than pleased look. “Right, right. Hmm, well, its for my trip to Mournhold which is why I chose the purple color…so one that looks nice enough that I wont stick out in the royal court? Long sleeves perhaps?” Thinking, Lin taps her fingers together and after a bit of discussion we figure out an ideal design. Having decided how the dress will look and measurements are double checked Lin begins to sew. Piece by piece it comes together, she even adds in a few gold accents here and there. The work is slow, but if things are going to be done right sometimes it requires slowing down and being intentional with every stitch, cut, and fold. While Lin works on her sewing I return upstairs to continue to do some more work of my own. Most notably I need to set a plan for my trip, the who, what, when, where, why, and how of everything. Having never been to the city or really interacted with most members of the house I reach out to Eno for some further information, and learn they are a rather shifty lot, I ask Lin if she can add a secret pocket or two into the dress and somewhat to my surprise find she already had, always two steps ahead of me she is. Not only are there normal pockets fit for carrying everyday items, there are two more secret pockets hidden in the sleeves, and another within the skirt. “I think it's ready.” Lin sighs after some time, my cue to try it on. To both of our delight it fits perfectly, and with my new periwinkle dress equipped with secret pockets, a stash of daggers, and a pile of papers large enough to knock a man out I’m off to Mournhold…and wherever my quest takes me after that.
