When Two Wrongs Don't Make A Right (Valan)

Prompt; “Hey, let me in I’m outside with your favorite pizza.”

Happy Tenth Birthday To Skyrim I Feel Old Now. Have Some Talvas Related Hurt/Comfort Because He Needs A Hug.

“Talvasss!!!” I yell, banging on the door of Tel Mithryn. A window opens and a head leans out “Who’s there...Oh, hello Valan.” Neloth’s steward, Varona, pokes her head out the window and waves down at me. “What do you want?” She asks adjusting a lock of hair behind her ear “Tell Talvas to let me in, I brought him something.” Varona relays the message and moments later Talvas opens the door. “I brought you something.” I say holding up the box. “Might make you feel a bit better after the whole incident with the ash guardian?” Talvas makes a noise and takes the box before going back up to the lab with me closely following. “Where’s Neloth?” I ask as the Lab is suspiciously empty of a certain level of narcissism and air of ego. “Observing the people working on the stones, per usual. Why? Don’t ask me.” Varona says taking a seat in a chair. Just as the three of us had finished getting comfortable there’s another knock on the door. Talvas makes a groan of annoyance and rolls his eyes “I’ll get it.” I say getting up and going to open the door.

Upon returning upstairs I inform the others of the newcomer “Guess who came to say hi-“ I say in a singsong voice revealing Teldryn from behind me “No doubt because he probably saw you had food leaving raven rock” Talvas remarks with a sly grin and takes a bite of pizza. “Well too bad for you, I’m not sharing.” Teldryn makes a faux sad noise “not even for me?” He asks “Especially not for you.” Varona bursts into laughter “Well then! I guess a certain amount of Neloths sarcasm has rubbed off on you, Talvas” She remarks, and gets a shrug from Talvas in return. Teldryn walks over and sits down next to Talvas on his bedroll. “So, Where’s our resident mad scientist? He really just left you two to run the place?” Teldryn asks putting an arm around Talvas “Doing observations, he’ll be in ravenrock overnight and be back tomorrow. Did you need something from him?” Varona explains. “No, just wondering why it’s just you two, and Valan.” Varona shrugs “There’s still the cook and his mycologist around, we’re not entirely alone. I’m a bit surprised we haven’t burnt anything yet though.” Talvas chuckles weakly “You didn’t see my toast this morning.” He sighs “Between that and the whole ash guardian ordeal I’m surprised I’ve got any skill with magic at all.” He pauses as if to say something else, then shrugs. “Well, if I managed to defeat a crazy nationalist, become immune to ‘the divine disease’ as Fyr calls it, and beat the tribunal out of power, you can do anything you want.” I reply “How could I not have thought of the heart stone? I mean your friend figured it out before I did!” I interrupt him “Incorrect, Anna simply picked up a rock, that just so happened to be a heart stone, and threw it at the thing. I love her and she’s a great friend, but not always the most thought through planner when it comes to potential enemies. And besides, two wrongs don’t make a right, no use beating yourself up about it.” Talvas makes a noise and sits back “I guess you’re right. You’re the oldest after all.” I nod “You’ve got that right. Now c’mon let’s have some fun!”

“Did I ever tell you about that time Neloth and I went wandering around a Dwemer ruin on Vvardenfell?” I ask taking a bite of pizza that Talvas had finally agreed to share with a bit of bribery. “Probably not, do tell.” Varona says, intrigued. “More fun times with freakishly old mad scientist man and blind reincarnated warlord...wonderful.” Teldryn remarks sarcastically. “Precisely. Anyways, there’s a good number of ruins on Vvardenfell and for some reason Neloth needed to find something in one, I can’t remember the name of the ruin but it was not overly far from Tel Naga and involved some artifact. And of course who does he recruit for the expedition? Yours truly.” Teldryn holds his hand up as if to ask a question “First of all didn’t you start off as his delivery boy? And second of all…Why didn’t he take Yuuri or Sammie or you know...someone with enough clear sight who can see where the mechanical menaces are coming from?” I shrug “I did start as that but I annoyingly worked my way into getting him to like me. Yuuri mainly stays on the mainland and Sammie was probably busy helping with the mycologist or doing something for Eno.” Teldryn nods “Fair enough, continue.” Having previously been employed for none other than the honorable grandmaster Eno Hlaalu, Teldryn gets that he sometimes has requests that require a certain skill set and at times a delicate touch.

I think for a moment of where I left off, Oh yes

“So we go to the ruin, fight our way through bandits, Falmer, and Dwemer machines and what do we find? A black book. In fact-“ I point over to the book sitting near the staff enchanter “It’s that black book specifically. We never opened it, of course. Just very carefully took it and put it in a bag before bringing it back to Tel Naga. I don’t really know why he collects them if he never opens them.” Talvas tries to stifle a chuckle “What’s so funny?” Varona asks, a bit confused. “It’s not really exactly funny, just a memory popped into my head of when your friend Anna opened it up once and then tentacles went everywhere and she very promptly closed the book- I do believe much to the horror of her companion, who’s name I have regretfully forgotten at the moment, nice fellow though.” Talvas explains “Said companions name is Farkas and I agree he is a very nice fellow, I like him. Anna…Like I said, is not the best at plans most of the time.” I reiterate. “I mean when you have magic, dragons, friends in high places, and a posse of werewolves who really needs plans?” Teldryn remarks with a grin. Now that I think about it, he’s got a point.

Eventually after some time we run out of stories to tell...and pizza, and decide to call it a night. Varona goes back to her own little house on the property leaving Teldryn, Talvas and I alone in the main building. “So, I heard you were beating yourself up over that ash guardian again?” Teldryn asks playing with Talvas’s hair as he lays his head in his lap “Who told you that?” Talvas asks, looking up at him “A little birdie told me…” Teldryn replies looking at me with a slight grin. Talvas on the other hand gives me a look of annoyance, and throws a pillow at me. “Ow! That wasn’t very nice.” Talvas simply makes an annoyed huff and lays back down.

“Sometimes it feels like I can’t do anything right…” Talvas mumbles. “Everyone makes mistakes, so you screwed up a bit, nobody got hurt and that’s what matters.” Talvas goes to say something in reply, likely about his forgetting the heart stone and the reason the whole ordeal was resolved “Anna throwing rocks at things is also not the best choice of action. Both in a way are screw ups. If it were any other situation they’d both be wrong decisions, and two wrong decisions don’t make a right one. Give it a rest. Now you know that you need a heart stone, problem solved.” On that reply Talvas closes his mouth. “Fine, I guess you’re right.” I smile slightly “And trust me, I’ve 1. Seen you work and 2. Am the king of not doing anything right, and you’re doing great.” Talvas makes a noise “No you’re not, you’re the nerevarine.” I grin “Well, has Sammie ever told you the amount of times I’ve walked into things? Or fallen out of windows? Or accidentally stolen something and gotten in trouble with the guards? Ask her sometime, she keeps a tally.” Teldryn puts his face in his hands trying not to laugh “A tally? You guys keep a tally?!” I nod “We have to, my mom asks for it every so often.” That makes everyone laugh a bit, as it should.

We continue to chat for awhile longer until Talvas falls asleep and Teldryn and I sit quietly continuing our conversation. “I’ve only met your friend Anna once or twice, she seems...interesting.” Teldryn remarks, carding a hand through Talvas’s hair as he sleeps against him. “Nice girl, a bit confusing at times, and doesn’t always seem completely “with it” but from what I’ve seen she seems 1. Quite powerful and 2. Very kind unless you happen to set her off.”

I nod with a slight smile “That’s probably one of the best simple summaries I’ve ever heard of her. As for the not being entirely “with it” she has a rare form of epilepsy that can make her a bit groggy or out of it sometimes, in addition she’s also Autistic. Very creative, extremely powerful when it comes to magic particularly destruction and alteration but she knows a bit of all schools, and is generally a pretty calm, happy and affectionate person so long as you don’t upset her. Then you either face the wrath of a very angry and or upset Anna, or she just gets very upset and will likely start crying...if anything the latter is probably worse since then you might face the wrath of two or three very angry werewolves.”

Teldryn nods “Noted, don’t do anything that I might regret.” I shrug “Most of the time though you’ll find she just wants affection, sometimes if we’ll be sitting around with some of our other friends she’ll just crawl over right into my lap because she wants a hug, and if left there long enough will probably fall asleep...epilepsy takes a lot out of a person.” I explain leaning back in my chair “Does she only do that to you?” I shake my head “No, she’ll do it to pretty much anyone of our friends, but mainly me and our friend Issy, and of course her husband, Farkas.” Teldryn looks up again “Is that the guy usually with her? Black hair, silver eyes?” I nod “One and the same. And if you happen to see someone who looks nearly exactly like him but with shorter hair and different clothes, and a lot edgier that’s his twin, Vilkas.” Teldryn scrunches up his face, thinking “I vaguely remember seeing someone like that but can’t completely remember where.” He shrugs, brushing the thought off. “And speaking of sleepy it’s getting late, I should probably go to bed.” I remark standing up and stretching. Teldryn checks his watch “It’s no use walking back to Ravenrock now so I guess I’ll just stay the night.” I bid him goodnight and decide to head off to bed.

The following morning I wake with a start as I accidentally roll out of bed and onto the floor, ouch. “Oh, you’re up, good, I was wondering when you’d wake up.” Talvas remarks pouring himself a cup of tea from across the lab before looking at me. With a groan, I get myself off the floor “What time is it?” I ask, still groggy. “Eh, about 9:00 in the morning- not too early.” With a sigh I flop back into bed “Get me up in an hour will you?” I ask Talvas before promptly falling back asleep. An hour later on the dot, I am awoken by none other than Talvas poking me incessantly and telling me to get up.

Upon sitting up Talvas hands me a cup of tea to wake me up more completely “If there’s one thing I can do at least somewhat right, it’s making tea. Neloth is very picky.” I laugh slightly at that “Oh he’s extremely picky, ask Fyr about what happened when someone gave him the wrong tea one time, very amusing story.” Talvas ponders for a moment “My guess is he either threw a fit or refused to eat or drink anything until he was brought another cup.” I take a sip of the tea “You’ll have to ask Fyr and find out.” Getting fully out of bed having finished the cup and thanked Talvas I go out into the main room, Teldryn is still asleep over by Talvas’s little area. “So you woke me up but not him?” I ask, pointing the cup at Teldryn’s sleeping form, curled up with his head resting on his arm. “To be fair, he’s got to walk all the way back to Ravenrock and do it before Neloth gets back because he’s technically not supposed to be here and you’re Neloths friend so…yes, I did let him sleep.” However, Talvas then goes over to the sleeping ex Morag tong assassin and flicks him lightly in the arm “wake up.” Teldryn bats his hand away and mumbled something and Talvas frowns before repeating the action and shaking him lightly as well. “Wake. Up.” With a groan Teldryn rolls over and opens his eyes “I’m up, I’m up, do tell me how you sleep on this floor it’s horribly uncomfortable. Neloth barely sleeps anyways.” Talvas pulls him to his feet “Aren’t Morag tong assassins supposed to be super tough and able to sleep on anything and anywhere?” The mage asks “Actually, no. That’s the dark brotherhood, the Morag tong has standards.” Teldryn replies, stretching and trying to chase away the remains of sleep. “When’s Neloth coming back?” He asks starting to pick up the pieces of armor he’d taken off the night before in order to sleep better. “Soon…ish, enough time for you to eat something and be on your way, at least.” As if on cue Varona comes up carrying breakfast, and we eat it chatting over tea.

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and having finished breakfast Teldryn bids us farewell and starts back to Raven Rock. Neloth comes back later that afternoon and doesn’t seem to have known anything was amiss. “How was your trip, master?” Talvas asks as Neloth unpacks his things “Ah it was fine. Ran into that friend of yours Valan while I was there, a peculiar girl, not that we didn’t already know that, but she is indeed peculiar. Perhaps it’s simply a Breton trait, I don’t know.” I shouldn’t say it, but he's right, at least to some extent, but then again, aren’t we all a bit odd?

Happy birthday to the game that gave me a reason to keep going for ten years, here's to ten more and hopefully we get TES 6 by then!

Until Next Time,

Max
