Flash Fiction February 2023 Day 2: Return Of Body (Anna)

A/N:  An unofficial and very short follow up to yesterdays I guess? I always thought that transformation must hurt especially the first couple of times...Today's is very much in the flash fic category, only a paragraph or two because 1. I am very busy today with other things and 2. This was a surprisingly hard prompt to think of doing something for? Who knows, maybe we will explore this concept more in depth another time, for now enjoy the brief shenanigans :)

Prompt: Return Of Body

One thing that nobody ever mentioned when explaining how lycanthropy works is how much your back hurts upon return to its normal form. “Drink the weird enchanted blood!” they said, “It’ll be fun!” they said. While I must admit that the improved night vision and sheer strength in that form is a plus, everything hurts now back in my typical form. “So you’re telling me you felt like this after the whole silverhand thing in dustman's cairn and still decided it was a good idea to push on and fight an entire room full of draugr?!” I question Farkas as he helps me up off the ground, having given me some time to just lay on the grass and rant about how my muscles hurt, and my jaw, and everything else. In response he shrugs and mumbles something that sounds an awful lot like a yes to the question. Given the fact he’s remarkably tolerant to the cold, even more than a typical nord with their built in frost resistance, a high pain tolerance doesn’t exactly phase me either. That said, upon returning to one's typical body after stretching and twisting all kinds of muscles, ligaments, and other internal structures who thinks it’s a good idea to keep trudging through a barrow filled with werewolf hunters, the undead, traps, unstable building structures that have worn away after centuries, and more, and then at the end fight a hoard of armed undead warriors all for a tiny piece of a fancy warhammer?!

    1. We will find out when I get around to looking at todays prompt. The list I’m using is doing all things related to H.P. Lovecraft, so we shall see.

Thank you! I find it’s a good practice to try and write every day, almost like the inktober of writing. I hope you’ll continue to follow along if you get the chance, I always enjoy seeing your comments :)

    2. That prompt was fabulous!

Even just for the title I could recognise it that way.

      Lovecraft; Lovecraft; Lovecraft!

I guess everyone who has been involved or will be involved in speculative fiction will come to him in some way - and/or his worlds.

This list is quite a winner/banger.

      Frost tolerance and pain tolerance.

Another benefit of writing every day is that you are able to come back.

And you will find your readership and audience doing the same thing, Max.

      Thanks for enjoying my comments,

    3. I’m glad you enjoyed the prompt! I had a fun time with today prompt as well.

I have never read any of his work specifically but there’s enough lovecraftian horror that’s made it’s way into the general population that I can recognize at least a little.

Glad you’re also enjoying the list! It makes me excited for 6 PM each day to see what the new prompt will be :)

Each race of Tamriel canonically has their own little set of powers (even if they cannot use magic) for Nords they get frost resistance as one of theirs. Dunmer like Valan and co get fire resistance and the ability to cloak themselves in fire briefly. So if you’d like a fun mental image- imagine Valan bundled up as much as possible and still freezing next to Farkas, in shorts, perfectly fine because what it’s only 30° F it’s not that bad. Or, the inverse, anywhere on Vvardenfell that isn’t far to the north where you have Valan in his typical attire, long sleeves usually a scarf to keep out the ash and poor Farkas not having a good time because he’s not used to a hot, depending on the location very humid, and volcanic environment.

Very true, and thankfully with my time sort of away I’ve been able to queue lots of things for this year so expect at least one post usually more per month.
