Flash Fiction February 2025 Day One: Rage (Lukas)

Happy February everyone, it's time for another year of flash fiction February organized by the Storytelling Collective! Each day of the month there will be a short (often very short) story to go along with the prompt for the day starting with today's prompt. The prompt of the day is "Rage" with prompts being inspired by the works of Octavia Butler this year.

Flash Fiction February 2025 Day 1 Prompt: Rage

Sometimes I find myself wondering if I’ve forgotten how to feel at all anymore. Lately I’ve felt like nothing but an empty, unfeeling, out of sorts shell of my former self. That is, up until around five minutes ago. Any feelings that had been hiding beneath the surface up to that point have been replaced with one I felt so rarely while alive. Rage. Pure, unbridled, burning rage. The cause of such a rapid and extreme change in demeanor? Turning the corner on the road to find the city I had been taking refuge in under attack. Buildings burn in the distance while screams and the metallic ring of steel against steel is heard growing louder as I make my way towards the gates as fast as I can. Finding the captain I help as best as I can to defend the docks while other resources are sent to assist elsewhere. While not the best fighter admittedly, especially not when compared to the captain and her many years of training, I can manage to hold my own thanks to magic and the small dagger Rana had given me as a gift. We hold our ground against the onslaught of heavily armed and armored soldiers coming from the ships fighting with a mixture of rage, desperation, and sheer will until eventually the day is won. Battered, beaten, and bloody the remnants of the forces defending the docks slump to the ground. The captain tiredly tells me I did a good job and asked what got me to fight with such fervor. With no other explanation I answer with a single word before falling unconscious from exhaustion. Rage.
