Flash Fiction February 2025 Day Six: An Unnatural Leader (Issy)

A/N: Looks can be deceiving, especially in the case of Martin, there is much more to him and his past than meets the eye hidden away

Flash Fiction February 2025 Day 6 Prompt: Leaders

They say some people are born to be natural leaders, though I certainly wasn’t. From what I can tell so far, the priest I’ve been told to rescue doesn’t seem to be either. Not only has he refused to move from the chapel until it’s completely safe- something that I can guarantee will not happen for quite some time, but also doesn’t seem to be fighting material in the slightest except perhaps verbally. He seemingly possesses no magical talent, obviously has no armor given his profession, and as far as I’m aware does not own or know how to use a sword. This is the one who is meant to save us all from the monstrosities pouring out of that terrible gate outside? After arguing some more about the plan to get the remaining survivors out safely so the bastard, in the literal sense rather than the insult, will come with me so I can hand him over to Jauffre and go on my way we come to a sort of compromise. I go deal with the gate outside while the citizens are prepared to move, as soon as the gate is dealt with those still alive will be evacuated and we’ll be on our way. Trudging back outside into the muddy mixture of muck, blood, and rain I throw a ball of fire at a lurking wounded spider daedra to finish her off while walking back towards the flaming gate to hell. With weapons at the ready taking a deep breath I step through the gate to be faced with the horde, who seem to have been waiting for me. Charging at the group of monsters I find myself thinking more on the general situation continuing to reflect as I cut down heavily armored dremora after dremora in quick succession. I really hate working with leaders, natural or otherwise, they always make someone else do the dirty work. Jauffre better pay me well for all of this, and the bastard too. He better end up turning out to be a better leader than he seems to be at first glance.
