A/N: Contrary to popular belief most non-officer jobs in the intelligence field involve a lot less danger and a lot more paperwork than one would think.
Flash Fiction February 2025 Day 3 Prompt: Truth
One of the interesting parts of being counted among the Blades is how few people know the truth of what I do on a day to day basis. Aside from my fellow agents scattered throughout the continent in positions ranging from the very obvious to the most secretive, I believe I can count the number of people that know the truth on one hand, and they don’t even take up all of it. People seem to think of the Blades and think of one of two things primarily; one being the Emperor’s guard who are made up of a small group of the most elite members of the Blades, and the other being extremely secretive spies who act as the eyes and ears of the Emperor throughout the empire. While the Emperor’s guard are a small highly selective sub-group within the structure of the Blades, very few members interact with them on a frequent or even semi-frequent basis. The most common contacts for them are the Emperor of course and his family, and the Grandmaster of the Blades whoever that may be at the time, it is extremely rare for a run of the mill Blades agent to encounter one of them. I’ve never met one, at least not yet, I think it would take something truly world ending for me to and I hope no such situation ever arises. Spies which are the other commonly imagined role when the average person hears of the Blades do exist and in many places can be found in quite a number so long as you know where to look. Yet, truth be told, they are not as exciting as imagined, some are rather boring. Their jobs vary of course depending on where in the world they are stationed and what their orders are though a majority of the time most just hang about and listen to everyday chatter, common gossip, and the occasional bit of potentially useful information. Beyond those two roles are the rest of us. I can tell the truth about my job to only those closest to me due to knowledge of sensitive information but honestly the rule is somewhat silly. The truth is that many of us just sit and look at papers all day. No secret missions, no high stakes protection details, no adventures. Only papers, papers, papers, until the end of the day comes and you don’t even feel like telling the truth about your job anymore. Better to be secretive, let the people wonder, it’s more exciting that way, and far less disappointing than the truth.
