Flash Fiction February 2025 Day 19 Prompt: Possibilities

Wandering through the shop I marvel at the variety of ingredients available including some I’ve never encountered before that sit alongside everyday staples and other ingredients I personally encounter frequently even if they are not necessarily common. The possibilities seem endless with a stock like this, and I’m informed moments after that thought that the shopkeeper has more on the way, including some things that are being specially imported from as far as Summerset. I don’t have much in my coin purse so I end up picking and choosing carefully what I can potentially get based on the recipes that I know for useful potions. The shopkeeper thankfully lets me know the prices of individual ingredients as they vary according to rarity, size, and associated qualities with the rarer and more useful understandably being more expensive. With my purchase eventually decided and the transaction completed she allows me to use the alchemy table in the corner by the window to test things, which I greatly appreciate, and make a mental note to bug Abigail again about the potential of acquiring one ourselves so I don’t have to search out for them in random places and ask to be able to use them for a bit. A question which can be rather awkward to ask a shopkeeper you’ve just met or another unfamiliar person. Laying out the contents of the bag holding the ingredients I’d purchased, I sort them according to properties while I prepare the rest of what's needed. There are a number of possibilities using this assortment including some that may have multiple effects. Careful to sort so only positive effects would be obtained, as a potion with the potential to speed up the healing of a wound while also poisoning the drinker would be counterproductive, I come to a final selection of 4 matching a recipe I had memorized that would make the drinker temporarily invisible. Such a thing can come in very handy, especially for those not skilled in magic…Abigail included. Yes, this is the right choice of something to make for today. All I can hope is that she is staying out of trouble, but considering I’ve left her unsupervised in a large and unfamiliar city the possibilities of what she could have gotten herself into in the past hour are endless. If she’s gotten arrested I’m sure I’ll find out eventually, sooner or later, I always do. For the moment, however, I enjoy the peace and quiet and a rare bit of time to myself.
