Flash Fiction February Day 2 Focus (Valan)

 Day 2 Focus:
“Focus! Don’t let your mind wander or you’ll fall.” I watch as Ayron tutors Talvas in the now technically illegal magical art of levitation. Talvas looks around and gives me a nervous look “Ah don’t look at him, he’s the biggest distraction here.” Ayron shoos me away “Go help Neloth that’s why you’re here in the first place!” He pauses and laughs slightly “You should have seen how long it took him to learn to levitate, took months for him to even be able to get up to my study without the assistance of a levitation potion.” he tells Talvas who looks at me with minor shock and I nod, Tel Vos has a complicated design and Ayron’s hanging study caused me an annoying amount of difficulty. After being shooed away again I turn with a slight grin and walk off in the direction of the tower, but unknown to Ayron, and Talvas, stop and find a hiding place to continue watching their lesson. “Why did they outlaw levitation magic?” I hear Talvas ask Ayron as they sit for a moment and Ayron casts a healing spell on the various cuts and bruises Talvas had obtained throughout the day as a result of coming crashing down to the ground. A feeling I am too familiar with, the amount of times I came crashing down into the sea around Azura's coast or into piles of ash is perhaps too many to count. “Eh, the mages guild didn’t like it, probably because most of them couldn’t do it, so they said no more levitation magic around the end of the third era. That made some mages pretty upset, around the same time they also outlawed necromancy, but the Telvanni never really did much of that anyways, so it wasn’t a big deal.” I hear Ayron explain and hear him chuckle softly “But I still remember the look on Neloths face when we were told levitation was outlawed, almost immediately after he went to work on that contraption he has at Tel Mithryn. It’s much more complicated than how people get to my tower if they need to, either I teleport them up or they use a big ladder.” Now that Talvas seems satisfied with the explanation and looks a lot less beat up, Ayron stands and pulls him to his feet. “Alright, again.” With some effort Talvas hovers above the  ground for a few seconds before touching down. “Its difficult to master, but it’s going to be even harder if you keep letting yourself get distracted.” Ayron says, folding his arms “What’s going on in that head of yours?” Talvas bites his lip and goes visibly red to the point I can see it even from my spot hidden among the rocks. “Did Fyr ever let you have a friend or acquaintance over?” I hear him ask very quietly almost in a mumble and Ayron bursts into laughter “That’s what keeps distracting you?! Oh does Neloth not let you have friends over? Or, is this about someone who is more than a friend?” Talvas turns even redder “It is! Oh please you have to tell me about them. Come on sit down.” Ayron drags Talvas over to the rocks they were sitting on earlier “Long story short, yes, Fyr let me have a friend over every now and then and generally did not particularly care what any of us were up to so long as it didn’t make a mess of things or break anything. Neloth though? Different story, he’s old and grumpy.” Ayron pauses and takes a breath “Now tell me about this ‘friend’ of yours…” After Talvas explains everything as Ayron listens very intently and quips he now wants to meet this ‘Teldryn Sero’ who he has just heard so very much about they decide to go back to the lesson at hand. As I continue watching from my spot hidden among the rocks I feel something sharply poke me in the ribs “Spying again?” Fyr asks, crouching down to also watch “What did I miss?” He asks “Not much, Talvas has fallen about seventeen times in the past hour and they just had a very mushy chat about boyfriends and are just getting back to the lesson.” Fyr hums “The usual, then.” we sit there silently “Why are you out here?” I ask him “Hiding from Neloth why else would I be here” Thats…fair, I suppose. The two of us crouched and hidden in the rock formations watch quietly with the occasional commentary between the two of us… “Focus!”
