In dreams I slip out of time and wander The Fade. The ever changing realm of dreams, nightmares, spirits, and demons. Walking where I know I should and avoiding the areas with less than pleasant entities. Occasionally running into a a spirit of Justice and his host, Anders. I had been dreaming peacefully though I awoke to the unpleasant sensation of being hit with a pillow. Grumpily opening my eyes and turning to look at the doorway it's Morrigan, with Alistair behind her. “Time to wake up.” She says and leaves a piece of paper on the table by the door. Tossing the pillow on the carpet and climbing out of bed I get dressed quickly, and examine the piece of paper for a moment on my way out. “I'll read it later” I decide and head downstairs.
I'm greeted unusually when I get downstairs. “Happy birthday!” The rest of the company shout standing around the table. “And happy new year!” Alistair adds in after, tonight at sundown begins our new year. Such a thing as this I've never experienced, as far as I can remember at least. “What?” I ask confused. Leliana’s expression turns sad then “You've never had a birthday party?” She asks. Morrigan whispers something along the lines of “I told you so.” Drawing a look from Leliana. “Well, okay I'll explain. Usually once a year on people's birthdays they have a party. They invite friends, unless it's a surprise party and the friends organize it. They have cake and other treats or go for dinner or something, and they get presents. We thought it might be nice to throw you a party, we’re your friends after all.” I look at the table, indeed there is cake, and treats and presents. “There’ll be even more food come sundown but that's for a different reason.” Oghren says drawing on Zevran for clarification that yes indeed that's happening. We sit down and Wynne takes and cuts the cake bringing back a slice for each person. “So this happens to people every year?” I ask examining one of the wrapped packages. “Usually, yes. And you can open those, they're for you after all.” I tear the wrapping paper off the open the box, it's some books. The next box holds clothes, and the next a spare version of the cloak I always wear, the last box holds a small metal train set. “Thank you. All of you. This is one of the nicest things anyone has ever done for me.” Alistair gives me a card then with some money in it saying he didn't know what to get me which makes me laugh. Extra money is always good to have. Then I turn to the cake “I made sure that it's all allergy free so yes you can definitely eat it, try it.” Leliana urges me and I take a small bite. “It's very good.” I admit before devouring the rest of the piece. After everyone has had a slice of the cake we wrap the rest up for later.
That night we celebrate the new year quietly, Zevran, Alistair, and I though we have an enjoyable time. Later sitting out on the step looking at the stars and watching the clouds pass by. “This was a very enjoyable day. I'm sad it's over.” I say looking up at the night sky. “Well now just wait a year and it'll be here again. That's how birthdays work, Ali.” I look over at Alistair “Did you ever have a birthday party?” I ask and he thinks for a moment “When I was very young but since then, not in a long time.” Zevran sighs in agreement he too had a similar experience. “I wonder why they don't give mages birthday parties, they'd be quite fun except for perhaps the Templars who hate everything fun.” Zevran laughs. “That's true. They really do.” Alistair says as he used to train to be a Templar, he hated it. While the other two aren't looking I get a scrap of paper and a pen then tap Alistair on the shoulder. “So about how you haven't had a party in a long time, Alistair...When's your birthday?” Time to plan a surprise party.
Happy Rosh Hashanah everybody! Chag Sameach! Sadly I have work until 10:00 PM tonight but I wanted to get this published!
Until next time,
Max
