Flash Fiction February 2023 Day 28: Late Is The Hour Of Destiny (Fyr)

A/N: I was torn between uh oh corpus or clockwork city related mischief but corpus won in the end. This is also the last prompt for 2023 flash fiction february! I had a really fun time with the prompts this month and hope you enjoyed them too!! Now to get back to work on the many many many longer wips that have been sitting in my drafts, if you enjoyed these mini fics I hope you'll stick around as I have lots more planned for this year :)

Prompt: Happenings in interval between preliminary sound and striking of a clock

“Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock…” goes the clock in the corner as I continue to work on my current research. The hour has grown late by now, though I don’t know exactly what time it is as the lab has no windows. The rest of the tower has gone to bed aside from the patients in the basement who try as they might find themselves unable to sleep peacefully and sometimes unable to sleep at all, which only quickens their descent into madness. They are in part what keeps me motivated to continue working late into the night at times like this. Corpus is a nasty disease, and at the current time has no cure, though I feel like I may be close to changing that. There is silence aside from the clock which continues ticking until there isn’t when the slamming of a door and a crashing noise breaks the quiet solitude. Being the only one awake I go to investigate and find none other than Valan collapsed by the doorway and go to deal with him in a way that has become like clockwork, as he winds up here, and injured, far too frequently. “I have corpus.” I hear him whisper as I go to approach which stops me in my tracks, and the clock strikes three, letting out a chime…the hour is later than I thought.
