Small Town Bar (Valan)

A/N Swimming to Tel Fyr is terrible every single time hence the reason I have a mark and recall spell set to the place and YES there is a quest where you get Neloth groceries because he's old. Anyways's, another semi daily prompt mini fic, enjoy!

Prompt: Small town bar

Sadrith Mora may be the capital of Telvanni territory on Vvardenfell, and technically a city, but in any case it’s still an awfully small one. Upon being told to head here in order to inquire about becoming an official member of the house, I didn’t expect to be asked for any kind of papers- and yet here we are. “Do you have your hospitality papers?” A man asks as he blocks the way into the town itself. “Hospitality papers?” I question, attempting to make my confusion rather clear. What in Azura’s name are hospitality papers? “You clearly aren’t from here, my mistake. It’s required that all nonresidents of Sadrith Mora carry a set of hospitality papers while in the town, and be prepared to show them to anyone who asks. Would you like to purchase papers?” I think about the possibility of sneaking past the man and coming up with an excuse for lack of papers if asked by anyone, but the amount of guards stationed here is more than one would expect for such a small place. As a result, I very reluctantly hand over my small amount of gold…I might have to ask Ciaus Cosades if he has any extra when I’m next in Balmora. Who knows, there might be some work here, and people might recognize my name, after all I did spend my young childhood in this very place contrary to the assumption of the man. “Here you are, keep them on you at all times. Is there anything else I can help you with before you enter the town?” As a matter of fact, yes he can, I question him about any local work opportunities, along with rumors and ask about any important information regarding the town itself. Turns out, the local inn that owns the quarters above the tunnel that goes into Sadrith Mora from the docks has a bit of a ghost problem. Other than that I’m directed toward the mages guild if I’m interested in them, and the building that houses the Telvanni who oversee most day to day operations for their masters.

The mages guild I have no interest in, why would I anyways? They’re far too political for my taste, personally. While the Telvanni can be political it’s more often an internal battle among the master wizards who disagree with each other about a variety of things, old cranky wizards arguing over this and that all doing their own personal scheming and experiments. I get a few errands to run from some of the apprentices, if one would call them that, who I find all with various tasks for their respective masters. However I put them aside for later, most require some sort of travel, and while I’m in Sadrith Mora I might as well explore, and see about the inn and their ghost problem.

Sitting down at the bar and folding up my cane before setting it aside I greet the man tending the bar who seems somewhat perplexed by me. “Never seen a blind person before?” The barkeep makes a noise “Oh, no sir it’s just…you look vaguely familiar. You been here before?” I shrug “unless you count the ages of zero to three years old, no.” The man smiles before thinking for a moment, and his eyes widen in realization “You’re that Velothi kid aren’t you- dad died some years ago and you and you’re mom had to leave…” I nod in confirmation, that’s me, Valan Velothi, little blind kid from that tiny island off Azura’s Coast. The barkeep clears his throat before offering me a drink, I politely decline, I’m more interested in the ghost than the alcohol. “Oh yes, you’ll want to talk to the owner, can usually find him upstairs. He’s been real concerned about it, can’t rent to room to anyone. Big problem when travelers like yourself pass through. Even Master Neloth’s head about the commotion.” I haven’t yet met this Master Neloth who’s tower Tel Naga is the main fixture here on the island, or if I have it was long ago, perhaps I’ll pay him a visit one of these days. That will have to wait until my other errands are finished. First, I need to figure out this haunting, and deliver some message from a Master Ayron to his former master and apparent father figure Divayth Fyr who lives on some island in the middle of nowhere. I thank the barkeep and head upstairs, finding the owner of the inn and questioning him about the spirit, it seems to be quite the problem and he has yet to figure out where it’s coming from, however he has his suspicions it’s tied to the mages over in Wolverine Hall. With some persuasion he allows me to stay in the room for the night to deal with the spectre.

After a surprisingly busy day I welcome the thought of a bed, even if it means I will inevitably be woken in the middle of the night. Changing into a clean set of clothes and setting a silver dagger on the bedside table I fall into bed facedown and fall asleep with relative ease. This is much better than sleeping on the ground. Of course a few hours later I’m woken by the ghost, however thanks to the silver dagger and some of my mothers basic close range combat training, as she used to work for the Morag Tong after all, the spirit is defeated rather easily with only a few minors scrapes and bruises. The owner having heard the ruckus finds me sifting through the spirits remains for anything useful and thanks me before allowing me to return to sleep. I think his hypothesis about the mages guild may be right, something about this ghost was unlike others I’ve faced while out exploring.

Upon waking in the morning I decide to pay a visit to the mages guild, and I’m faced with the typical snobbery, between persuasion and a little bribery I do manage to find a lead, and upon confrontation she gives it up, she did it and after a bit of pushing I manage to have her promise to not do it again. Returning to the inn I explain the confession of the mage and the innkeeper is happy to have the problem resolved, along with the knowledge of being right in his hypothesis. I’m given some much needed gold and a few other things, the majority of which I’ll probably sell.

Now it’s off to find Sload soap for master Neloths person in charge of errands and task, or Mouth being their official title, and to bring this strange seemingly coded message to Divayth Fyr. Why he isn’t on the Telvanni council I don’t know, I’ve only heard stories of him growing up, that’s he’s an ancient and somewhat eccentric wizard known for liking his privacy and hating politics with a passion. While being arguably one of if not the oldest member of House Telvanni, every year he refuses a seat on the council. Whatever master Ayron wants with him is either extremely important and thus secretly coded to only be deciphered by the old wizard and his adopted son of sorts, or it’s a simple letter asking the old man to come visit or related to another personal matter. Whatever it is, getting to Tel Fyr will be it’s own adventure, as there’s no boat service, and who knows what goes on in the tower of a four thousand year old wizard?
