A/N: I'm doing The Stoytelling Collective's 2 Week Daily April Writing Challenge again this year. Things will vary in how mini they are, this one is very very short. They may also be posted throughout the month rather than just the first two weeks of April, as this month is quite busy preparing for exams and graduation and everything.
April 2025 Mini Prompt 1: What Defines
What defines a friend? Is it someone you share your closest thoughts and darkest secrets with? Is it the person that you sit with at meals and gatherings but otherwise don’t interact with much? Is it someone thousands of miles away who hasn’t returned a letter in years that you still think of from time to time out of the blue? Is it the person you recognize passing by enough to nod hello and keep walking? At what point does someone no longer become a friend? Is a friend still a friend even if they have long since passed away? Unable to sleep I find myself mulling these thoughts over in my head. Friendships are a funny thing, the more you think about it. Laying there silently, staring up at the dark ceiling, my eyes heavy from fatigue and yet unable to sleep. Waiting for the hours to pass, for the sun to rise again, hoping at some point I will be so exhausted I’ll fall asleep without meaning to. Drift off into a dark dreamless sleep until it’s morning. For now, I lay awake and think- what defines a friend?
