Flash Fiction February 2023 Day 26: Museum Of Antiquities (Valan)

A/N: The handwritten notes from Ayron found in the Imperial and Dwemer museums always crack me up so have a little bit of wholesome Valan and Ayron museum viewing chaos for today.

Prompt: museum of antiquities

“Ayron…why do you have an Imperial guard locked in a cell?” I ask the mage as we wander through part of one of the towers of Tel Vos. “H-he uh…it’s a long story. He’s fed, he has clothes, his basic needs are met, he’s fine, that's what counts.” Ayron responds as the guard gives him a less than pleased look from the other side of the barred door. I make a mental note to bring that up at a later date, but Ayron is at least somewhat right that the guard could be in a much worse situation. Currently it just looks like a slightly upscale form of house arrest, and he looks more annoyed than in any actual distress. Ah the Telvanni are strange, even the most progressive of them, this is one of the many reasons we get a bad rap as a Great House I think. “Oh you’ll want to see this room!” Ayron exclaims and takes my hand practically dragging me along until we get to a large and much better lit room than what he called his “Imperial Museum” that housed a number of artifacts and books along with the guard. “Welcome to the Dwemer museum!” He gestures to the large open room which is full of antiquities. “Mind the centurion though, it’s temperamental. I haven’t had a chance to fix it completely yet…” Ayron adds in a quieter, calmer, and slightly embarrassed voice. “I’ll show you around, come on.” he says after giving me a moment to process the sight and we begin with the exhibit closest to us. There are schematics of airships, ancient maps, and multiple artifacts on display. “This one is my favorite, first thing I ever found when Fyr and I stopped at a dig site on the way to Tel Fyr originally. I’m still surprised he, not to mention the researchers working on the project, let me keep it.” Ayron points out a small metal cup that sits in a case along with other similar objects. That’s a cute image to imagine, little kid Ayron running around showing everyone a really rather dull metal cup, but still even though it’s unremarkable to the untrained eye it has value from a historical perspective. I for one find the more intricate objects to be fascinating, like the tiny model airship which Ayron allows me to touch. It’s quite helpful considering I’m supposed to be searching for some kind of airship for someone as the one they tried to build seems to have gone missing along with the crew. “Mistress Dratha likes to collect amulets, Master Neloth likes to collect books, Mistress Therana likes to collect mental illnesses…and I like to collect stuff like this.” Ayron explains as we finish making our way through the Dwemer Museum after only a brief standoff with the temperamental centurion on display. You can tell he was trained, and for the most part raised, by Fyr- they both have the same hobby of collecting Dwemer artifacts, enjoy tinkering with things, and have a habit of insulting yet somehow getting along with Neloth. If I ever get a tower perhaps I’ll have to create my own museum of antiquities…though I don’t know what I’d put in it.
