Things to know about a nicu baby...

Over the years both my parents and myself have gotten some fairly rude comments from people and I would then to know some things about NICU babies.

1.Not everyone is born at term: I was born severely premature at 27 weeks 2 days but was the size of a 23-24 week baby.

2.dont stare at us: just because a child might look or act differently is no reason to stare, give the parent looks or say pull your child away from the other child.

3.Not everyone has a natural birth: my brother was born in a not quite emergency c-section (he was born early but it was not an emergency and I was born in an emergency c-section because of my mind blood pressure.

4.Not everyone is fine when the go home: I was brought home on oxagen and many medications some of which I still take like my seizure medicines.

5.some of us aren't neurotypical: I'm certainly not.

In conclusion these are some things about NICU babies and parents. You can add your own things in the comments, just put the number, the reason and why.

Until next time,
Meredith

  1. Not turning out "normal" is perfectly fine.

    2. I agree. When have you last met someone who is 5'10" tall with an IQ of exactly 100 and brown hair and brown eyes? I have never met such a person.

    3. Neither have I. I'm only 4,11 and I'm almost 14 and a half

  2. Awesome list. I'm also a former NICU baby, born at 28 weeks weighing 1 lb 14 oz. My twin sister and I have gotten similar comments. This goes along with #1 but I have been told it was impossible to be born so early. Well obviously not. We are living proof. Is your brother your twin?

    1. My brother is 3 years and one day older than me. I have had similar comments to yours as well. Are you and your sister identical twins? Also I have a question, you can wear glasses when you have hearing aids right? Because I'm getting new glasses in a week.

    2. No we are not. Yes you can. I have had glasses since around the same time I got my hearing aid. Also my surgery for my GERD is hopefully soon. I met with the surgeon and I have a test on Wednesday. After they get the results from that, the surgery can be scheduled.

    3. Thanks for answering my questions. Good luck with your surgery! Is it at mass eye and ear? Or somewhere else?
