I cried again but the new audiologist was nicer this time. No hearing aids though :(

I had my ABR and hearing tests yesterday and it took 5 and 1/2 hours. The audiologist will give me a note for I-Sense but clearly said that she will NOT give me hearing aids EVER unless my hearing worsens. She thinks it's some sort of auditory processing disorder or even something worse but did see that I have slight-mild hearing loss in higher and medium frequencies. Ugh (cue exasperated sigh)

  1. No!!! Cant they do a trial with hearing aids to see if they help? I know there is a trial period when you get a new hearing aid. If they don't work you return them and get your money back.

    1. I know right!!!! The doctor said "I don't want to give her hearing aids because they just amplify everything and I think her hearing is too good for hearing aids." Umm no it's not I agree with you Kathryn I want to try it and see. They want me to see neurology and neurophysch and to get another educational evaluation to see if it's APD or something worse, one thing that she kept mentioning yesterday was MS because that's a bad disease that can sometimes affect hearing. I think we are trying the I sense at school but I don't know what we're going to do outside of school! A pair of I sense outside of school costs over 2000$ I would rather spend that on hearing aids and a personal FM!!!! :(

  2. Ask why she will not let you have the hearing aids. She might be concerned about something that is making her withhold them.

    1. She thinks it is an auditory processing issue and afraid that hearing aids won't help because they amplify everything not just speech but I need everything amplified in my opinion!!! In the report it said " patient may experience communication difficulties in background noise. Traditional amplification will not adequately and selectively improve signal to noise. Continue use of FM system is recommended." Recommendations were "Neurology consultant, continued use of FM system, assessment of classroom by professional who has experience with children with hearing loss and can provide input for appropriate classroom acomadations."

    2. Tell her an account of the severity of your hearing loss and why you think it is more than auditory processing issue.

    3. I will because I really think that amplification will help.

    4. You are the only one who knows your body. Sometimes you have to advocate for yourself. It may be a pain but it really helps you grow as a person. And I say that as someone who knows.

    6. I will tell you this: It's not easy. The process self-advocacy is as follows:
      1. Knowing what you need/want
      2. Knowing how to ask for it
      3. Working up the courage to ask for it
      4. Persistence in asking for it

Self-advocacy is not a linear process. There is no cut-and-dried set of steps to follow in an exact order. You may need to go back to step 1 several times.
