Flash Fiction February 2023 Day 11: Dreams Of Flying (Fyr)

A/N: I am finally caught up after being stuck in the hospital since Thursday after an unexpected admission from the ER and being away from my laptop! Have some short but wholesome Fyr family content to celebrate my release from boredom and the step down unit, hopefully it stays that way as my body continues to fight off whatever it's caught this time.

Prompt: Dreams of flying over city

“Ayron! It’s time for bed!” I call and hear a groan of disappointment from the other room near the entrance to the basement. That’s strange, usually this is Delte’s territory and she is not overly fond of the boy messing with rather important accounting documents. Turning the corner instead I find the two together building some sort of contraption. “I’m not tired!” Ayron protests, to which Delte simply shrugs, I don’t think she really wants to be involved in the conversation and would rather just assist in whatever Ayron is attempting to build. Lately he has been fixated on Dwemer contraptions, specifically the famous airships, He  seems to have a longtime interest in flight and levitation from what I’ve learned about him since meeting him originally that one day on the little farm in the middle of nowhere. Not wanting to argue, I leave the two for a few more minutes to continue to work, instead hunting down the other three girls to see what they are up to. Uupse I find mending some armor, one of the few tasks that will get her to sit still. Alfe I find in the study organizing books in a complicated system first by alphabetical title, then by size, then by color of the book’s outer cover. Not an uncommon behavior for her and yet one that I still find fascinating as anyone else would get bored of such a task in a matter of minutes, and yet Alfe has enjoyed organizing and sorting objects since she could grasp items as a baby. Beyte I find in the kitchen trying and failing to bake something so late at night, a habit she tends to engage in when stressed, but it is better than some of her other far stranger behaviors and utterances that have manifested lately. With the timer up I return back downstairs to Delte’s little corner of math and paperwork to find a mostly complete patchwork model airship and two very happy inventors who seem quite proud of their work. Ayron runs around the room pretending to make the airship fly until he tires himself out and agrees to go to bed. The girls I allow to stay up a little longer, after all they are a few years older, they will each head to bed eventually. As Ayron and I go upstairs he rambles excitedly about the model and everything recent he’s learned about flight and Dwemer engineering and places the little replica on an empty spot of shelving in his room next to a model centurion and folded paper cliffracer. After demands of a story or two tucked into bed along his stuffed Guar who seems like he could use a good wash and possibly some mending Ayron eventually drifts off to sleep, likely dreaming of piloting his own airship and flying over ruined cities and far off lands. One of these days I really do need to introduce him to Yargrum, I find myself thinking as I turn out the light and leave Ayron to his dreams of flying.
